Ruben Muñiz

My PRIMER profile is not your standard accounting of business and personal accomplishments. I wanted my PRIMER profile to be an expression of how others view me. Given that PRIMER is about the unity of our "Familia Latina" and the growth and support of each other. I invited my familia to write my bio. I wanted you to share the view that my wife, Victoria Muniz, has of me. We have known each other for 35 years. She has taught me that you do not measure your life by your successes; but by how you overcome obstacles together. There are no better eyes to have seen my life and to share it with you.

I would love to introduce to you my husband, Mr. Ruben Muniz. Ruben has been with HSBC Group, in New York, for 23 years. He has held positions of increasing responsibility and scope in Global Market Finance, Customer Profitability Reporting, MIS Analysis and Planning and most recently, as Business Manager and Customer & Strategic Planning Manager for HSBC's Corporate Banking Division in the America.

It's amazing to have seen him accomplish so many goals and still have time to be a loving husband and supportive father. Ruben's drive to succeed began in the sixth grade, where I first met him. He was top in our class even back then. When we graduated from 8th grade, Ruben won all the awards, even attendance. I believe his sense of responsibility comes from his father, a man who worked three jobs to support his family of twelve children. You may have heard that Ruben sits at "numero diez" in the Muñiz family. He was born and raised in Spanish Harlem's "El Barrio" section. When people ask where he is from today, he always states "I sleep in New Jersey, but I live in New York." You cannot separate Ruben from his New York spirit and el barrio roots.

During our marriage I have often heard Ruben say "I want to do more for my community. I want to give back, to make a difference." I have observed as he has mentored and inspired people who have met him and worked with him. He is a devoted and loyal friend. He is a good brother to his family. What I love most about him is that he means what he says and he stands for what he believes in.

Ruben is a former chairman of HSBC's Hispanic & Latin Diversity Council and currently sits on HSBC's National Diversity Steering Committee. As part of his diversity efforts he was part of HSBC's Hispanic Marketing Campaign in New York and its Spanish Language Literacy program. He has been a guest speaker at ALPFA Newark, New York University, PACE University and Macy*s all within the 4th quarter of 2006. He is a believer that the next Latin explosion in the US will not be cultural but business and commerce driven. His diversity work at HSBC has been centered around business development in the Latino community.

His commitment to the Latino community and it youth is evidenced by his community and business affiliations. Ruben sits on the board of directors of Repertorio Español, is on the Business Advisory Council of Alianza Dominicana and Murry Bergtraum School for Business. He is an active board member of ALPFA, Virtual Enterprise, the LatinVision Networking Group, the Mahattan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is the recipient of the HSBC Excellence in Leadership Award, Mahattan Borough President's Medal of Excellence and the National Eagle Leadership Institute's Annual Eagle Award for Excellence in Leadership.

My grandmother once told Ruben and me "You are not pirates, yet you have found a treasure". Once again I have the opportunity and honor to share my "Jewel" with the PRIMER family. I can say, you are in for a treat, because in your presence you have a good human being, a loyal friend and a true "Leader."
