Joe Mella

Joe Mella is the Chief of Staff for the worldwide Controllers organization at Goldman Sachs. Joe is responsible for the Controllers’ finance organization and the divisional CFO reports to him. He has oversight of the division’s global human resource functions and general management for the division’s project office. This office supports business continuity planning, office space initiatives, vendor management programs, information security and compliance issues, and general divisional administration, among other functions.

Previous to this role, Joe was the Goldman Sachs’ Global Head of Recruiting and supported every division and role worldwide. He managed a global team that was responsible for the sourcing and hiring of all Goldman Sachs employees throughout the globe, across all levels and all divisions. He also managed two Goldman Sachs firmwide programs: the Internal Mobility Program, which offers career development opportunities across regions and divisions of the firm, and the Employee Referral Program, through which Goldman Sachs employees identify talent for the firm.

Joe joined Goldman Sachs in 1987 as an accountant in the Controllers department of the Finance division. His first tenure with Controllers encompassed several roles throughout the organization, including four years in the firm's London office where he was responsible for compensation and expense management processes for the European region. Joe returned to the United States as Chief of Staff for the Controllers department and was responsible for compensation, administration, training and development, recruiting initiatives and managing a desktop technology group.

Joe was a Project Manager in the Engineering department of Automatic Data Processing (ADP). He was responsible for operations and management support. Before ADP, Joe was a Product Engineer with Johnson & Johnson International.

Joe has significant experience serving on non-for-profit boards. He serves in many capacities with diverse organizations, including as member of the:

  • Advisory Board of the Executive Grapevine (an European HR association)
  • Corporate Advisory Board for Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA),  and is a former chairman of the board
  • Advisory Board member of Pace University
  • National Association of Black Accountants (NABA)
  • Advisory Council Member of the New York Times for Job Market Research (term ended)
  • International Association for Corporate and Professional Recruitment (IACPR) (term ended)
  • Advisory Board to the ESIX Academy (term ended)

Joe is also a founding member and the former Treasurer of the PRIMER organization. At work, Joe is also an active committee member to the Goldman Sachs Hispanic Network.

Joe holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Rutgers University.

Joe lives in Freehold, NJ with his wife Cathy and two children.
